Bama Rush’s viral fame has boosted interest in Southern schools.

Aug 13 2026

Bama Rush’s viral fame has boosted interest in Southern schools. For students in the South, wanting to go to the University of Alabama and being a part of Greek life is common. But as their sorority culture has become globally visible, college admissions counselors and sorority coaches say interest in Alabama has become more widespread. In fact, Alabama’s out-of-state undergraduate share increased from 23% in 2002 to 65% in 2022—which one source calls “the Great Student Swap” of Northern students heading to SEC schools and vice versa. Some students perceive the culture as a more tight-knit community or traditional college experience, though it doesn’t hurt that they offer significant merit scholarships to out-of-state students. But it is true there are more girls looking to join Bama Rush years before graduation thanks to social media exposure. Some are interested because of the influencer prospects that would come with their membership, but rush coaches say this aspiration won’t win them a spot. (Town & Country)
