Gen Z is conflicted on what the first day of work dress code is.

Jun 30 2026

Gen Z is conflicted on what the first day of work dress code is. Some Gen Z professionals are reportedly swapping blazers and slacks for oversized tops and loose, “pajama-like” pants, “putting the casual in business casual.” But it’s not about them not taking their job seriously like some older gens might assume; they’re prioritizing individuality and expression over office suggestion (or sometimes policy). This shift aligns with Gen Z prioritizing personal style in all aspects of their lives, with some young people even leaning into quirky, micro-trending outfits to intentionally set themselves apart at work. Plus, Gen Z draws a lot of outfit inspiration from social media and creators who don’t work office jobs—though they give ideas on how to make trendy looks appropriate for the office, at least in their eyes.
