A new wave of apps could be building the next age of social media for Gen Z.

Jun 10 2026

A new wave of apps could be building the next age of social media for Gen Z. As TikTok and Instagram become less about connecting with friends and more about zoning out to a feed of strangers’ content, newer apps are building smaller, more personal social spaces that focus on community. These alternatives are designed for Gen Z who may be more willing to restart building their networks in a new place. Retro goes back to the basics of photo sharing with just people they know, Cosmos is a visual inspiration platform that lets users hide AI content, Corner is a social map app that lets users curate lists of locations they love, Airbuds lets users share the music they’re streaming in real time, and Fable is a book club community app—just to name a few. A connecting theme is that these apps connect users with people they really know or people who love the same things they do, not an algorithm of new faces every day. (TechCrunch)
