Gen Z-directed horror hits are taking over the box office. Young people can’t seem to stop talking about Backrooms and Obsession, both directed by twentysomethings who got their start as internet creators. Backrooms, based on notorious internet lore to begin with, was directed by 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons and grossed $81.5M in its opening weekend—but was produced for just $10M. This makes Parsons the youngest director ever to create a global number one movie. According to exit polls, more than half of viewers were under 25-years-old, with 44% under 21-years-old. Obsession, directed by 26-year-old YouTuber Curry Baker, cost less than $1M to make and raked in well over 100 times its production budget. And this weekend, both Backrooms and Obsession grossed more than Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. (The Independent)
