Some teens are struggling to find summer jobs (again).

May 27 2026

Some teens are struggling to find summer jobs (again). News of depleting summer gigs have been around for years but signs indicate this could be the worst summer for teen employment since 1948. Summer camp counselor jobs on Indeed are down 30% from last year. Requests for this year’s Summer Youth Employment Program in NYC already beat out last year’s record as more teens struggle to find work for the season. It partly ties back to the fact that hotels, amusement parks, and other historically reliable summer employers in the entertainment and leisure industry plan to fill 70% fewer roles compared to last year. Because teens depend on these summer jobs to gain work experience ahead of college and save money, some parents are doing the standard networking calls for their kids, while others are posting job opportunity inquiries on social media. One silver lining in the chaos, though, is that postings for lifeguard jobs on Indeed are up 78% from this time last year. (WSJ)
