Kids’ tech tantrums are overwhelming parents. For many parents, the simple request of turning off a screen can cause extreme meltdowns—a BYU study shows 93% of toddler parents report screen-related tantrums at least sometimes. And the reactions sometimes become so out of hand that parents feel helpless and unsure of whether they’re dealing with an actual emergency. Research backs up what families are experiencing: a University of Washington study recently found that 22% of screen-time transitions prompted negative reactions from under-5-year-olds. Experts are split on whether this is addiction or normal emotional dysregulation, but they do agree that the problem starts when parents use screens to manage difficult emotions and behavior—which about 28% do multiple times a week, according to Lurie Children’s Hospital.
