Gen Z is obsessed with adding “whimsy” to their days. (Again!) Whether it’s adding sprinkles to their iced lattes or wearing a matching pajama set to bed, some young people are adopting “whimsical” habits and hobbies to feel happier. This playfulness and spontaneity spans from language—like saying “sauntering” instead of “walking”—to sending postcards or doing mostly offline activities that embrace their inner child. It’s showing up in shopping behaviors, too; according to Etsy, searches on the platform for whimsical decor, jewelry, and other items are up 50% from last year. As young people face no shortage of personal and global challenges coming into adulthood, it’s not entirely surprising that they’re looking for small escapes to make their day-to-day lives feel a little less intense.
