Older gens have had enough of Gen Z’s “silent scream.”Has a young person told you they’re “screaming,” even when they’re actually not? Or maybe even made the face of a scream, hands over their mouth, without making any noise at all? That’s the “silent scream,” indicating excitement over something. There are plenty of Gen Z gestures that don’t seem to make sense to outsiders. The “silent scream,” however, really ruffled some feathers on social media recently, with some people saying the gesture is indicative of the fact that Gen Z doesn’t know how to properly communicate with others. Linguist Adam Aleksic said gestures like this appeal to young people because they don’t have to verbalize the full scope of their feelings—which can be associated with being cringe. But while Gen Z’s communication style might bother onlookers or suggest a young person is too online, this is simply the reality of their lexicon as any other gen had. (The Independent)
