Laufey and Sombr have both put a fresh spin on the “video vixen era.”

Apr 21 2026

Laufey and Sombr have both put a fresh spin on the “video vixen era.”In two new crossover music videos, some of Gen Z’s favorite musicians cast popular young actors and public figures in their music videos—an early 2000s strategy best known as the “video vixen.” Back then, these cameos typically centered on attractive, recognizable faces like athletes and models. Instead of just focusing on aesthetics, though, Laufey and Sombr both leaned into influential, culturally relevant, and community-representative figures. Laufey’s “Madwoman” music video featured all Asian and Asian-American stars—Hudson Williams, Lola Tung, Alysa Liu, and Megan Skiendiel. Sombr’s “Potential” music video featured Madeline Argy, an ultra-popular British influencer, and Gavin Casalegno from The Summer I Turned Pretty in a Bonnie and Clyde style romance. YPulse has told you that Gen Z is still very much into music videos, and these crossovers are giving them the kind of fandom-driven moments they’re craving. (Forbes)
