A New York City food hall is staying alive by winning over Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Three years since the Tangram Mall opened in Queens, the space is still drawing in crowds while others have shuttered. It’s doing so in large part by catering to Gen Z’s palate and keeping young customers top of mind in the design of the space. The market has a completely intentional community space feel, very much checking the boxes of the “third spaces” we know young people are after. At the food hall, they’ll find plenty of space for hanging out with friends or doing homework, an aesthetically pleasing environment, and modernized, Instagram-worthy Asian-American food that makes them inclined to stick around—and come back. Helen Lee, the executive VP of the mall’s codeveloper company, said that she felt inspired to blend the popular, affordable food alleys and sophisticated malls in Asia when thinking about the feel of Tangram Mall.
