Is the Gen Z rock band Geese a marketing “psyop”? Geese had a sudden hit of rock-and-roll level fame at the end of last year—YPulse told you about Geese’s come-up back in December, when people likened the band to “Gen Z’s Nirvana.” But the Brooklyn indie band shot to fame so quickly that some started throwing out “industry plant” allegations. As it turns out, these skeptics might have been onto something, at least in the way of marketing. It was recently discovered that the band is a client of a digital marketing company which created social media campaigns using their music to boost the band across the TikTok algorithms especially. That meant some—potentially a lot—of the “fan content” that promoted them was manufactured, not organic. And while industry plants are nothing new in the music world, critics say it can impact the visibility of hard-working bands when musicians in the indie space use those tactics as pop stars might.
