Young men are seeing tons of content claiming “real men eat meat.” American youth culture has been increasingly fixated on protein lately and brands were quick to tap into the trend, releasing everything from high-protein coffees to protein popcorn. But it’s not all casual, healthy snacking and gym gains. On social media, many young adults are also showing off their “carnivore diet” breakfasts and dinners, which involve meat, fish, and eggs while avoiding all plant foods. In the manosphere and protein-obsessed content cycles, the mindset behind upkeeping a carnivore diet is not necessarily rooted in health or science—the people pushing this content frame high meat intake as the fuel for masculinity. Online, young men are increasingly being nudged toward a version of masculinity that is defined by traditional markers of strength and dominance, but pushed to an extreme. (Vox)
