The price of proms have increased significantly in the last year thanks to inflation. From pricey promposals, Instagram-worthy gowns, and limousine rides to expensive before-and-after parties, prom has become a full-blown red-carpet affair. Of course, not all families can afford these extras—but even the basics are costing more. According to a recent estimate, the price of a prom ticket is now up 128% since 2000, with personal care like hair and nails also jumping 110% over the same time. Meal costs, women’s dresses, corsages, and limo rides have also surged since last year, with men’s suits the only component that saw a dip in price. Teens and parents are feeling the pressure to spend big on this rite of passage, which can be a strain on families with tighter budgets. For many, these lavish expectations and rising costs are making prom feel like an ultra-exclusive event and less like a night of having fun with friends. (Washington Post)
