Gen Z travelers are taking international “microtrips” over long getaways.

Mar 31 2026

Gen Z travelers are taking international “microtrips” over long getaways. Rather than waiting for a chunk of time off, this gen is carving out a few days here and there for short getaways. According to an Expedia survey, 25% of Gen Z and Millennial travelers plan to take a microtrip in 2026 (a.k.a. a weekend trip), with Toronto, the Bahamas, and Puerto Rico leading the pack. TikTok is fueling the trend, with creators breaking down their multi-day adventures in other countries and making them look doable to young viewers. YPulse knows travel is a priority for Gen Z, and microtrips let them be more intentional with their time while feeding their love of “doing things for the plot.” They’re also budget-conscious, and obviously, shorter trips can be easier on the wallet. That said, microtrips do have challenges: experiences across time zones can be exhausting and, if not planned carefully, could backfire on the kind of low-stress experience they’re chasing.
