Teens are getting potentially harmful dieting advice from AI. Among teens 16-years-and-older, nearly half attempted to lose weight in the last year, according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine. And while diet culture been an issue for every gen, today’s teens are getting advice from chatbots—which is creating unique problems. A new study found chatbots being asked to create weight loss diets for a simulated 15-year-old user recommended calorie deficits far below dietician recommendations, and imbalanced protein, carb, and fat intake. AI might give advice misaligned with expert and national health recommendations because bots may not distinguish information that is opinion from credited research, pulling from sources with misinformation. Experts worry that teens getting this kind of advice from a source they trust could lead to unhealthy eating and weight loss habits or eating disorders. (CNN)
