Speaking of trends coming back, grunge is returning for some Gen Z girlies.

Mar 17 2026

Speaking of trends coming back, grunge is returning for some Gen Z girlies. Bringing back oversized flannels, distressed denim, and beat-up boots might feel random, but the fashion industry has been laying the groundwork for years, like R13 turning designer grunge into a luxury aesthetic. At the same time, the resale boom has helped fuel the trend: platforms like Depop and eBay have trained Gen Z shoppers to value secondhand clothes, pieces that very well could resemble the same thrifted staples worn by the first wave of grunge fans. The timing also lines up as we see a new wave of guitar bands like Geese bringing rock back into the spotlight. And interestingly, this messy aesthetic is rising right alongside the sleek Bessette-Kennedy style we told you about, showing Gen Z is pulling inspo from both ends of the ‘90s spectrum. (Marie Claire)
