American Girl Doll’s historic line got a new look; some legacy fans don’t love it.

Feb 26 2026

American Girl Doll’s historic line got a new look; some legacy fans don’t love it. For the brand’s 40th anniversary, they re-released their line of historic characters with modern twists to their outfits—and actual doll molds. While the company’s classic doll that Millennials and Gen Z grew up with is not gone, the new line is made up of smaller dolls that some online aren’t loving. To the critics, the dolls look too skinny or even mature compared to the old ones, bringing out commentary on Ozempic culture and a lack of their original history. The dolls mirror the classics who represented stories from 1800s immigration in America to escaping slavery, but their newly imagined above-the-knee skirts and space buns are meant to appeal to the next gen of kids. Kidult toy sales have outweighed the youngest group in recent years, but the brand feels they can’t bank only on nostalgia to stay afloat. (NYTCNBC)
