The BBC is turning to a YouTuber to boost Britain’s chance at Eurovision. In an effort to connect with Gen Z voters, BBC is looking beyond traditional talent pipelines and tapping into internet-born creativity. This year, they’ve chosen Sam Battle—better known by his chaotic, inventive alter ego Look Mum No Computer—to represent the U.K. this May. Known for building bizarre musical machines out of retro tech, Battle first went viral back in 2018 with a synthesizer made from dozens of Furby toys—an invention that racked up 7.4M views and helped grow his loyal online following to over 1M fans. And while he may seem like an unconventional pick compared to past British Eurovision acts, Battle represents something valuable: authenticity and digital appeal. That matters more than ever, especially as 15-24-year-olds made up a huge share of Eurovision’s audience in recent years and public voting now accounts for half the final result. (The Telegraph)
