Talks of countries banning social media for kids are going global. In just the past few months, a growing number of countries globally have seriously started cracking down on social media use among kids and teens. Australia set the tone at the end of last year by becoming the first to roll out restrictions. Denmark announced in November that they’re moving to ban social media for kids under 15-years-old, while in January, French lawmakers followed by passing a similar bill. In Germany, leaders are discussing a proposal to restrict access for those under 16-years-old, and Spain’s prime minister announced plans earlier this month for a ban as well (pending approval) alongside efforts to hold platform executives more accountable for harmful content. Meanwhile, the U.K. is still in the consideration phase, exploring a potential under-16-years-old ban and even looking at limiting features like endless scrolling that are designed to keep young users hooked.
