Investors are betting on digital-first sports leagues to capture young fans’ attention. Former footballer Gerard Piqué just scored (no pun, intended) $63M for his Barcelona-based Kings League, a competition built for how young people actually watch sports, with shorter matches, flexible rules, and free lives streams across platforms like YouTube and Twitch. Germany’s Baller League, who recruits influencers, celebrities, and former pros, also pulled in $25M in funding in late 2024. The appeal for investors is simple: young audiences are no longer tied to traditional TV. More are watching sports on their phones or keeping up through social media. In fact, YPulse data shows 31% of 13-39-year-old Europeans watch the league or sport that they follow on YouTube, and another 20% follow along on social media. By mixing entertainment, creator culture, and gameplay tweaks, they’re turning sports into something more interactive and shareable. (Bloomberg, indy100)
