Northern Ireland’s new licensing rules hope to make Gen Z driving safer.

Feb 11 2026

Northern Ireland’s new licensing rules hope to make Gen Z driving safer. It’s true that many Gen Z teens aren’t driving, but that’s far more likely in America than it is in Western Europe, according to YPulse data. But starting in October, Northern Ireland is set to introduce “graduated driver licensing” reforms, the first of its kind in the U.K. The changes—largely aimed at 17-23-year-olds—will require learners to wait six months before taking their test, complete 14 training modules, and face restrictions on nighttime driving to help reduce crashes. Reactions from teens have been mixed: some say the rules make sense for safety, while others admit they’re “not looking forward” to the delay in getting on the road. (BBC)  👀 Read more from YPulse: The Cost of Driving is Keeping Many Gen Z Adults Out of the Driver’s Seat
