Gen Z is ditching grand romantic gestures for “relation-sipping.” New research from Pepsi U.K. and the dating app Thursday found 77% of Gen Z daters prefer small, sweet gestures often over occasional big, sweeping displays. (Like small, steady sips of connection over one excessive, performative pour.) In fact, 65% say they’d be mortified if a partner staged a performative romantic moment for social media. Many find grand gestures cringe because they come across as intense, fake, and inauthentic—just for the post, not full of meaning. Instead, they prefer daily reminders of love like consistent good morning texts, remembering a coffee order, or being sent a song that reminds their partner of them. These micro-moments make the majority of Gen Z feel seen (83%) and valued (85%), and nearly half even say they’d stop dating someone who didn’t show up this way.
