Urban exploring has gone from a niche history hobby to a teen influencer pipeline. BBC reports a “dangerous rise” in young people filming themselves trespassing in abandoned factories, hospitals, and even private homes, hoping the clips will launch a viral content career. Boys under 18-years-old are behind numerous urban exploring (a.k.a. “urbex”) TikTok accounts, with some starting as young as 12-years-old. One academic says the motivation behind the subculture has changed compared to previous generations. Most urban explorers a decade or two ago merely did it because they had “a deep interest in either history or architecture.” Now it’s for quick clips, often low-quality, filmed by kids “just messing about” in buildings filled with asbestos.
