TikTok’s “disgustingly educated” trend promises to cure Gen Z’s brain rot, but there’s a catch.

Jan 28 2026

TikTok’s “disgustingly educated” trend promises to cure Gen Z’s brain rot, but there’s a catch. The trend features videos of girls pouring over books, explaining bite-sized history lessons, and sharing tips for “information consumption,” all with the promise of making viewers “disgustingly educated” in a matter of minutes. It’s clearly resonating: the hashtag has racked up more than 12M TikToks so far. And while the intention behind the trend may be positive, experts caution that more scrolling isn’t the fix. As one clinical psychologist explained, what people often call “brain rot” isn’t a loss of intelligence, but rather a loss of depth. Short-form content trains the brain to constantly seek novelty, leaving the nervous system overstimulated and unsatisfied—and even educational TikToks prioritize quick hits over sustained focus. So, while Gen Z might be turning self-improvement into a performance for the algorithm, it won’t rebuild the attention muscles it claims to strengthen.
