Gen Z has made voice notes their go-to way to keep in touch. Globally, 9B voice notes are sent daily, and according to Statista, the average person now spends nearly 150 hours a year recording and listening to them. The format exploded during the pandemic and has become Gen Z’s preferred way to keep in touch, especially with many having phone call anxiety. But critics say there’s a problem with this: voice notes are one-way communication, not real-time conversing. Just over half of Gen Z (52%) say voice notes are replacing in-person interactions, and 49% admit to spending entire evenings trading audio messages instead of just meeting up. It’s efficient and personal in its own way, but it does shift what “keeping in touch” actually looks like. (The Independent)
