Young women are ditching X for Reddit. Despite the platform’s reputation as a male-dominated space, Pew research shows Reddit usage has skyrocketed since 2019, with growth largely driven by female users. One reason is the growing distrust of X, which now has a more extreme male-female ratio than Reddit for the first time ever. Women leaving the platform cite Musk gutting content moderation and rising harassment as key reasons. But the shift reflects a broader exhaustion with the algorithm-driven, ad-saturated internet. Reddit’s appeal is the opposite of Instagram or TikTok: anonymity, no pressure to post idealized images, and hyper-specific community threads over suggested posts. Threads dominated by women have also given new topics a boost on Reddit: r/endometriosis is up 79% year-over-year, and r/pregnancyUK has surged 214%. (Dazed)
