Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 proves “niche” fandoms can dominate the box office. The sequel shocked Hollywood with a $63M opening weekend (nearly double tracking estimates) and beat Disney’s Zootopia 2 despite playing on 600 fewer screens. The key was leaning hard into the super-fandom. Creator Scott Cawthon packed the film with easter eggs with deep-cut references, including finally revealing what’s inside “The Box,” a locked chest that’s been an unsolved mystery in the games for a decade. Young male gamers are considered Hollywood’s most elusive moviegoers, but when framing their favorite titles right, they can absolutely be a valuable audience. After all, this is the same demo that turned A Minecraft Movie into 2025’s biggest blockbuster. Bringing cult classic games to the screen with more than kids in mind might seem like betting on a niche, but as one analyst put it, “It’s not niche if it’s No. 1.” (Vulture)
