Social media is less social lately, and AI isn’t helping. YPulse has told you Gen Z is feeling a bit exhausted by their algorithmic feeds, where they see little of the friends they follow and more niche influencer content. And while that was once fueling discovery and community, the rise of “slop” content is making it feel less authentic. There is creative AI content young viewers engage with and useful tools for creation, but there’s also tons of hard-to-decipher deepfakes that make them skeptical of everything they see. And even as platforms pledge to label AI content or begin offering AI filtering, the sheer volume of the content makes that tricky. Some users now steer away from content simply if they think it’s AI, which hurts creators not using it. In turn, social media is evolving again from being entertainment-focused, not personal connection centered, into something full of content that’s not only unattainable, but simply not real. (CNET)
