Gen Z is cutting down on doomscrolling to take community offline. At ZCON, a Gen Z marketing conference, speakers described how Gen Z is cutting down on doomscrolling, as 81% report experiencing digital fatigue. Some Gen Z are so fed up with their screen time habits that they’re using Brick devices to avoid compulsively opening apps throughout the day. They don’t want to quit entirely, though, as 47% still spend 2-4 hours a day on socials. Instead, Gen Z wants social media to fuel their IRL connections, but not be home to them exclusively, and are choosing IRL meetups and local events to feel a real sense of connection. Some creators are leaning into this interest, like designer Ramisha Sattar, who is hosting craft nights for followers to connect. But the trend creators are seeing take root is not the death of social media like it may sound. Really, Gen Z is being more intentional about their use of these platforms, and aiming to create positive spaces (online and off) to connect with like-minded people, rather than just scrolling.
