YouTube’s new “Hype” feature lets fans help small creators get noticed. For creators with fewer than 500K subscribers, there’s now a button under videos which viewers can use to hype up to three videos a week. Each “hype” gives points that can push videos onto discovery leaderboards, and smaller creators get a bigger boost to help them stand out. Videos that get hyped show a special badge, and fans can even earn a monthly “hype star” badge for showing support. YouTube says Hype is all about letting fans be part of a creator’s journey—and it makes sense to highlight the smaller creators as YPulse data shows 64% of 13-17-year-olds and 67% of 18-24-year-olds actually prefer recommendations from small creators over big influencers.
