Tons of young people attended NYU’s first “Swap Shop.” According to current NYU students, the university’s “dorm-trash” problem is well known amongst the community. So much so, that “treasure hunters” routinely show up during move out day to search for both high end items like AirPods and dorm essentials like clothing hangers on the curb. This year, three university departments and three student volunteers created the “NYU Swap Shop,” in order to provide the overflow to students—especially the 21K international ones who are unable to travel with large dorm items—and combat dorm-trash. The event offered over 5K completely free items, including everything from microwaves and desk chairs to Halloween costumes and (one pair of) designer shoes donated by students moving out last Spring. By opening day, a TikTok video posted on the university’s account describing the four-day event had over 500K views, and students lined the block around the ex-grocery store where the swap was being held.
