Gen Z is sharing their “unhinged” advice for fighting back against toxic jobs.

Aug 12 2025

Gen Z is sharing their “unhinged” advice for fighting back against toxic jobs. Instead of taking their work problems to HR, young workers are posting TikTok hacks like “malicious compliance”—following instructions so literal it slows things down—revenge quitting, CC’ing fake lawyers into tricky email chains, or even making up stories about themselves just to confuse gossiping coworkers. For some, it’s about protecting their peace. For others, it’s a way to push back against micromanagement and unrealistic demands. These tactics to keep a job but not give their all to it, are fueled by low job security, high living costs, and a lack of better options, becoming a form of corporate survival for a generation that’s quick to call out bad management. Experts say such moves could backfire and hurt future career prospects, but Gen Z has had no problem walking away from employers that don’t provide flexibility or respect their boundaries in the past.
