Instagram launched updates to make the platform more social for Gen Z. The app introduced a location-sharing map so friends can see where they were last active—like on Snapchat—and new repost capabilities for Reels and feed posts—like on TikTok. It’s also expanding the “Friends” tab, which now shows posts, likes, comments, and reposts from people they actually follow, making it easier to engage with friends’ activity—something many young people have been requesting for years since “the algorithm” changed their feed flow. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri says the goal is to shift the app from a passive entertainment space to a more participatory one (like it once was), tapping into trends that are already popular among young users on other apps.
