Some kids are treating AI like their friend by asking for advice.

Jul 18 2025

Some kids are treating AI like their friend by asking for advice. According to YPulse, 77% of 13-17-year-olds have used an AI chatbot, and 59% have used the tool for general advice. When it comes to help with relationship and social interactions specifically, data from Common Sense Media shows one third of teenagers now turn to AI for advice. Teens say AI companions make them feel less lonely in the moment, and they often share personal information with their chatbots as they would with real friends. But experts say this can be problematic, as AI companions are designed to agree and validate, not challenge or guide teens through real emotional complexity. Some warn that this reliance on AI may reduce teens’ real-life social development and even expose them to privacy concerns since personal data shared with chatbots can be used by the companies who own them.
