Young people think this new band on Spotify might be an AI fake. The Velvet Sundown has popped up on Spotify with over 370K monthly listeners, but TikTok says something feels off—from the band’s overly polished promo photos to the oddly vague, almost algorithmic bio. There are no interviews, no trace of the members online, and they don’t even have band social accounts. Plus, their song credits list only The Velvet Sundown, with no mention of producers or collaborators. It all adds up to what feels like an AI-generated concept—and while some Gen Z listeners are intrigued, most are skeptical. YPulse data shows 59% of teens and 57% of young adults would care if an influencer—or in this case, maybe a musician—were AI-generated. And though YPulse’s Music report shows 28% of teens and 39% of young adults actively seek out and listen to music composed / performed by AI, they’re not always doing it for serious listening—more likely for memes. So, if The Velvet Sundown is AI, it’s walking a fine line between fascinating and fake in the eyes of young consumers. (Mashable)
