“Crashing out” is Gen Z’s term for a mental breakdown.

Jul 01 2025

“Crashing out” is Gen Z’s term for a mental breakdown. YPulse’s latest Mental Health report shows that stress and burnout are peaking for young adults. They’re overwhelmed by school, money, work, and personal life, and in their usual dark humor, they’re calling it “crashing out” as a way to cope. The term refers to “unfiltered actions of a person who is angry, anxious, confused, stressed out, or experiencing mental health issues,” and can include anything from emotional outbursts to throwing physical tantrums. Think Justin Bieber’s recent “standing on business” moment or Huda Mustafa’s intense behavior after a fallout with her former match on Love Island. Some young users on TikTok see “crashing out” as empowering, but mental health experts say that these posts could be glorifying emotional meltdowns and ignoring the “why” behind them. (Vox)
