Trump’s U.S. travel ban is making it risky for international students to leave the country. The new policy blocks or restricts entry from nearly twenty countries—including Venezuela, Iran, and several African and Muslim-majority nations—citing national security concerns. While the White House says current visa holders can still reenter if they leave, the reality feels far less certain for those under student visas. Many international students are canceling summer travel plans, afraid they’ll get stuck abroad or be denied reentry amid current immigration issues. Some who had already left after the school year ended were even scrambling to return before the ban took effect on June 9. Universities had warned students for months that something like this could happen, and now it’s forcing many to stay separated from their families, put internships or travel plans on hold, or question their future in the U.S. altogether.
