More young French people than ever are living with obesity. While France has historically been a country with low rates of obesity in the EU, they’re now facing an uptick among young people especially. According to the French health site Ameli, obesity among French 18-24-year-olds has quadrupled since 1997, and nearly tripled among 25-34-year-olds. It’s an issue that the junior health minister Yannick Neuder is taking seriously, and claims that metabolic diseases, diabetes, and obesity affect almost 20% of French children and adolescents. While the full plan to curb obesity will come out in September, Neuder has already mentioned a few ideas including making it easier for citizens to receive weight loss medication like Wegovy and Mounjaro by expanding the power of general practitioners to prescribe them. Additionally, they’re in the process of negotiating prices for reimbursement of these weight loss drugs, as they currently cost around €300 per month. (The Local)
