In England, students are becoming less engaged when they get to secondary school. A new report from the Research Commission on Engagement and Lead Indicators reveals that one in four students report a decline in enjoyment, trust, and sense of safety after transitioning from primary to secondary school. The decline is especially pronounced among girls and students eligible for free school meals, indicating those with lower financial statuses, with the gap in trust and belonging widening as they progress. The study, based on data from 100K students, also links lower engagement to higher absenteeism rates—which we recently reported on, as experts call it an epidemic. (The Guardian)
