Gen Z is reportedly saving the accounting industry.

Apr 18 2025

Gen Z is reportedly saving the accounting industry. Though once considered a boring and outdated career, many Gen Z see the job as a sure way to earn six-figures. And with a looming accountant shortage as seasoned workers retire and others leave due to burnout—340K accountants have left the industry in the last five years, and 75% of those remaining are expected to retire in the next decade—there’s tons of opportunity. Young people are already joining the industry through programs like the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, helping low-income Americans claim refunds while gaining real-world experience. And while the number of students earning accounting degrees have dipped since their 2015–16 peak, the tide may be turning. At Oregon State University, 98% of accounting grads report securing jobs right after graduation, often with the highest salaries across business programs. Plus, with accounting work now involving more strategic decision making and less manual calculations, more Gen Z may be inspired to follow suit. (Fortune)
