College students are feeling the impact of DEI rollbacks on their education. In February, The Department of Education mandated that academic institutions cease engaging in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. And while some are holding off on making changes, others like the University of Iowa are already getting rid of “living learning” communities that focus on Latino, Black, and LGBTQ+ experiences, as well as cutting scholarships and staff positions tied to DEI. This has left some students scrambling for housing and feeling a loss of community and support. For young people of color, who are more likely to want to attend college and are more excited about the college experience according to YPulse, these changes may be especially disheartening as these programs were meant to support their sense of belonging.
