The internet is “holding space for the lyrics of Defying Gravity.” In a press interview moment that has gone hugely viral, journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist told the stars of Wicked she had seen people online “taking the lyrics to ‘Defying Gravity’ and really holding space with that.” Gilchrist meant to share how queer people, mostly her friends, felt so connected to the message of breaking through limitations, and actress Cynthia Erivo reacted with sincere emotion. But the clip quickly took off on social media as a joke: everything from deciphering what “holding space” meant to the way Ariana Grande held just one of Erivo’s fingers in support has made meme content. It’s also been made into merch, which is par for the Gen Z meme course now, and Gilchrist says friends have encouraged her to be the one distributing it. (Variety)
