Gen Z’s 2024 language domination continues: “brain rot” is Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year. Joining other dictionary’s words of the year with “demure,” “manifest,” and “brat,” language experts and more than 37K voters chose “brain rot” from Oxford’s short list. It’s become synonymous online with the kind of fast-paced, bizarre-humored content Gen Z and Gen Alpha watches, and the result of watching it. Since 2023, Oxford says use of the word has increased 230%, as it’s become normal to see the term everywhere from social media comments to mainstream news headlines. Other options for Oxford’s 2024 pick included Gen Z-popularized words “demure,” “lore,” “romantasy,” and even “slop”—meaning the low-quality, AI-generated content that might be causing the brain rot.
