Young Germans increasingly worry about war in Europe. Shell Youth Study found that 81% of 12-25-year-old Germans say war in Europe is an issue they’re concerned about. This number jumped by +35pts since 2019, before the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Germany is only separated from Ukraine by Poland, meaning young Germans are probably seeing even more tangible effects of the war in Ukraine than their peers in the rest of Western Europe. Their concern about the expansion of an armed conflict in the region is now the top issue they’re most afraid of, before poverty and climate change. The study also reveals a likely related regain of interest in politics among young Germans during the same period: 51% are now interested in politics, a +10pt increase since 2019. (DW)
