A new viral trend has teens stealing zippers from Nike Elite backpacks. TikTok is filled with videos either flaunting their collections of detachable Nike backpack zippers taken from classmates, strangers, or even stores, where zippers are being snatched from displays. But naturally, some people are complaining after their zippers have been swiped—showing the flip side of the trend. With more than 26M related posts on the topic of Nike Elite Zippers, there’s a lot of curiosity about the motivation behind collecting these specifically. But after the initial viral post, serial zipper stealers just attach them to clothing or accessories as a sort of “trophy.” The trend seems to be about the thrill of successfully stealing them and hoarding them up, not really the item themselves, meaning people are now having to find ways to protect their zippers from being stolen.
