OG YouTuber MatPat sold his channel so he could retire—and wants to show others it’s possible for them, too. According to the (now ex-) YouTuber Matthew Patrick, his channel with over 19M subscribers was well-positioned to transition to new hosts, which was a main consideration in pitching the channel-turned-company for sale. On his main channel Game Theory, Patrick would analyze video games and make explainer videos about his theories. Though his personality drove the channel’s initial popularity, he thinks the format of his videos made it a bit easier to onboard new hosts. And now that he isn’t making videos anymore, he wants to use his position to educate legislators on Capitol Hill about what creators need as small businesses. Patrick’s exit is pushing the industry forward by showing that it’s possible to retire from a social media career, and that a channel can really be an entertainment company in the making.
