More Gen Z college students are reneging job offers—just like companies do. Research firm Veris Insights found that 6% of students went back on full-time job offers this year, nearly doubling the rate from 2021. This seems to be a sort of power move for them, as students are increasingly aware of companies that withdraw offers, sometimes only days before the expected start date—leading to many students feeling justified in going back on their own word. But a significant portion of this reneging is due to poor timing, as companies frequently pressure students to make decisions before they have had the opportunity to finish interviews with all other potential employers. And some students are deliberately accepting multiple offers shortly before their start date as a precaution against last-minute withdrawals from employers, making them the one who gets the final say.
