A group of eighth graders in Pennsylvania created fake TikTok accounts impersonating and attacking their teachers.

Jul 10 2024

A group of eighth graders in Pennsylvania created fake TikTok accounts impersonating and attacking their teachers. This incident marks the first reported case of its kind in the U.S. where the fake profiles shared disturbing content, including “pedophilia innuendo, racist memes, and homophobia.” The fake accounts even fabricated sexual rumors about teachers’ personal lives. Hundreds of students viewed, followed, and commented on the fake accounts, and as a result, some educators reported being hesitant to discipline misbehaving students, while others struggled to maintain their usual teaching routine. The story has gone viral as other teachers have come out reporting similar experiences. Some teachers reported the accounts, and the school district took disciplinary action against several students by suspending them. (NYT)
