Is Gen Z buying into misinformation about sunscreen? A recent survey by the American Academy of Dermatology revealed that despite Gen Z’s love for skincare, many are woefully mislead about the importance of sun protection. Nearly one third (28%) of 18-26-year-olds believe that getting a suntan does not increase the risk of skin cancer, and 37% only apply sunscreen when told to. Experts attribute these beliefs to widespread misinformation on social media platforms like TikTok, where creators promote myths like chemicals in sunscreen being more harmful than a sunburn, among other misdirecting claims. Though, Millennials were into tanning beds without social media to promote them. (NYT)
