Is social media really the main issue for kids’ mental health?

Is social media really the main issue for kids’ mental health? Psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s recent book The Anxious GenerationΒ has sparked controversy, as many experts question his claims about the effects of social media on kids due to a lack of concrete evidence. In fact, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that there is insufficient evidence to link social media usage with changes in adolescent health. While some studies suggest potential health effects, they were not specifically designed to examine the impact of social media on children. And with the possibility of a bill aimed at restricting minors’ access to social media (the Kids Online Safety Act), the topic of a true connection between social media and mental health is gaining more attention and sparking debate.
